01 — WHAT

What is it?

The KPI & Reporting Program — AU Medium is a ready-to-implement performance measurement framework designed for Australian medium businesses with 16 to 100 staff. It gives senior leadership and department managers a structured way to define, track, report, and act on performance data across all departments — with Australian compliance obligations built into every layer of the program.
It includes everything in the AU Small Business program, plus department-level dashboards, quarterly management reporting, escalation and accountability controls, director-level obligations under the Corporations Act, and a senior leadership guide for managing KPI performance at scale.

02 — WHO

Who is it for?

• Australian business owners and senior leaders managing performance across multiple departments
• Department managers who need to track and report on their team's KPIs
• Australian medium businesses (16–100 staff) with more complex Fair Work Act obligations
• Organisations that need to demonstrate management maturity to the ATO, Fair Work, lenders, or investors
• Leadership teams replacing informal or inconsistent performance tracking across departments

03 — WHY

Why does it matter?

At 16 to 100 staff, Australian businesses cross important legal thresholds. From this size, you are no longer a small business employer under the Fair Work Act — which means different minimum employment period rights, stronger right to disconnect obligations (from 26 August 2024), and the full force of wage theft criminal provisions (from 1 January 2025). Performance measurement at this scale must track compliance, not just operational metrics.
Relevant considerations include:
• Fair Work Act 2009 — small business employer definition no longer applies at 16+ employees; right to disconnect applies in full; wage theft is a criminal offence from 1 January 2025
• Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and Australian Privacy Principles when KPI systems handle personal information
• Superannuation Guarantee — 12% from 1 July 2025; late payment attracts SGC and penalties
• Corporations Act 2001 — directors who rely on reported KPIs for governance decisions carry personal liability exposure where those KPIs are unreliable
• Modern Award compliance — the most common Fair Work prosecution trigger for medium businesses
Without a KPI program, businesses risk:
• Directors making governance decisions on unreliable performance data
• Wage theft and super guarantee failures going undetected across multiple payrolls
• Department managers working from different definitions of the same metric
• Performance problems identified too late to correct before Fair Work or ATO intervention
• Difficulty demonstrating management maturity to investors or acquirers

04 — WHEN

When do you need it?

• When the business has grown beyond what the owner can personally oversee
• Before the next AU financial year planning cycle (July–June)
• When the business crosses 15 staff and Fair Work Act obligations change materially
• When directors need reliable performance data for governance decisions
• When department managers need a consistent framework for tracking and reporting
• When the ATO, Fair Work Inspectorate, or an investor is asking for performance data the business cannot readily produce

05 — WHERE

Where does it apply?

• Compliance performance — super guarantee, Modern Award, BAS lodgement, PAYG, workers compensation (pre-loaded across all departments)
• Financial performance — across the full P&L, by department where relevant
• Customer performance — satisfaction, retention, complaints, NPS
• Operational performance — productivity, quality, turnaround times by department
• Staff and HR performance — headcount, turnover, training completion, absenteeism
• Sales and pipeline performance — by team, by manager, by product or service line

06 — HOW

How does it work?

• Start with compliance — mandatory AU compliance KPIs are pre-loaded across all department registers and dashboards and cannot be removed
• Define department KPIs — each manager identifies the operational KPIs for their area within the approved framework
• Set targets — business-level targets approved by the Business Owner; department targets set by managers
• Build department dashboards — each manager owns their department's numbers, including compliance obligations
• Report upward — monthly department reports feed the quarterly management report for senior leadership
• Escalate when needed — compliance KPIs bypass standard escalation levels and are flagged directly to the Business Owner
• Review annually — full KPI library review aligned to the AU financial year
